Can we offer you a few tips on how not to murder your turbo? Did you just ask what is a turbo? Ok we are kind of slow here in the office today so we will play your game.

Basically a turbo is an air pump and it works by using the exhaust gases that are created by the engine. The exhaust gases turn an impeller that spins the turbine that forces air under pressure into the engine intake to produce power.

Lets talk about your basic car turbo for these tips and understand why you should think about the turbo. For starters the turbo impeller shaft can spin at speeds reaching 300,000rpm's add to that 1,500+ degrees F. in temperature produced by the exhaust gases and you can quickly understand that heat and lack of lubrication are a turbo's worst nightmare.

Tip #1 keep fresh oil in your engine, Synthetic oil preferred to keep the turbo cooled and lubricated. Change your cars oil in the recommended intervals by the manufacture. Don't play around with those once a year claims of some oil manufactures. Oil oxidizes over time so just change it often it's only a few bucks now a day.

Tip #2 keep the air cleaner clean. A clogged filter will affect boost. Change it, don't make the turbo work harder than it should putting excessive strain on it. Just imagine yourself trying to survive by only sucking air through a straw.

Tip #3 Let the turbo slow down before you shut off the engine which stops the flow of oil to the turbo causing it to starve for oil and because of the extensive heat at the turbo it will bake the oil that is sitting in it. So the turbo is now not being cooled or lubricated. Not good.

Tip #4 Use light acceleration with the initial first start of the day for the first few blocks, let the oil warm up so you can get good flow. When the oil is cold you get good pressure but low flow.
